Oct. 2017 – April 2020: Postdoctoral researcher in Applied Linguistics and Valorization, PI group Narrative Cognition & Communication, Centre for Language Studies, Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands

As a postdoctoral researcher I aim to contribute to foreign language literary education in Dutch secondary schools.

I investigate whether it makes a difference if pupils read short stories in Dutch (their L1) or in German (a foreign language taught in school) on the degree of absorption in short stories and, related to that, students’ enjoyment/appreciation of those stories. The idea behind this is that reading in an L2/FL – under certain circumstances – evokes a less strong emotional response than reading in the L1. As a result, reading in the L2 is possibly a less pleasurable experience. Simultaneously, I investigate whether classroom instruction (more/less student autonomy, more/less teacher-centered) influences absorption, engagement, and students’ joy in reading stories in a foreign language.
